PLACES TO SEE

1. Freedom Riders Museum
A museum dedicated to the 21 courageous people who decided it was time to take a stand against oppression and organize an event to raise awareness about the ridiculousness of segregation.

2. Dexter Avenue Parsonage Museum
This is the home of Martin Luther King, Jr., where he and his family lived from 1954 to 1960 during which time he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

3. Civil Rights Memorial and Memorial Centre
A monument celebrating the journey that African-Americans made towards a new era of acceptance and the equality that they eventually achieved. The memorial centre expands on this effort to honour those who fought for their rights and freedom. It features several state-of-the-art exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs. It also has a Wall of Tolerance and a section that highlights contemporary issues with social justice.

4. Rosa Parks Library and Museum
No exploration of the Civil Rights Movement is complete without the mention of the infamous Rosa Parks. It features an education segment on segregation and the movement (mostly meant for children) but it also features a re-enactment of the events that took place on the bus as well as speakers who were actual participants during the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott.

5. National Centre for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at ASU
This seems interesting, not only because of the wide array of exhibits they have on display, but also because they have scholarly lectures and stories from those who were directly involved with the Civil Rights Movement. It is also an historic site.
